diy hair ties
These are the only hair ties I will wear in my hair. They are cute, don't pull at all, and barely leave a kink when taken out. I remember when I first discovered this type of hair tie, I couldn't get enough of them. I kept buying them in different colors but they would stretch out quickly and unravel at the ends. I decided I would make them myself for way less money with better fabric. These take less than 20 minutes to make and are so handy to have.
I found great elastic at sunshineshoppesupply.com. This can be purchased at many places online as well. Just search "fold over elastic". You can also get it here on Amazon. 1 yard will make about 4 hair ties. I suggest getting the 5/8 inch width, but the 3/8 inch width would work as well.
Supplies:
- fold over elastic
- lighter or flame (optional)
- scissors
- ruler
How to:
Cut the elastic to be between 7 - 9 inches long. This will depend on how thick your hair is and how many times you like to wrap it around your hair. If you like to wear the ties on your wrist, then you may want to cut the elastic to fit comfortably around it. I cut mine to 7.5 inches. Now, just knot the ties at the ends as shown in the picture below. The last step is to burn the edges of the ties so they don't fray. This is optional. Whenever I bought these at the store they would fray within weeks, so this helps the ties to last longer and look cleaner. You can see the difference in the pictures below. And that is it! Now, instead of $2.50 per hair tie you will be paying about 13 cents ($.50 per yard)!!
